The invention provides isolated polypeptides of EIIIA and EIIIB segments of the fibronectin (FN) and their fragments and homologues and scaffolds, such as cell culture plates, conjugated or joined with these polypeptides. The invention further provides methods of using the polypeptides and scaffolds to expand stem cells and methods of using the expanded stem cells to treat patients.
