β-TYPE SIALON, PROCESS FOR PRODUCTION OF β-TYPE SIALON, AND LIGHT-EMITTING DEVICE

A process for producing a β-type SiAlON, which comprises: a mixing step of mixing aluminum oxide and/or silicon oxide with silicon nitride, aluminum nitride and a europium compound; a burning step of burning a mixture produced by the mixing step under the conditions of a temperature of higher than 1950˚C and not higher than 2200˚C for 10 hours or longer; and, subsequent to the burning step, a heat treatment step of treating a burned product with heat in an atmosphere of an inert gas other than nitrogen at a temperature of 1300 to 1600˚C inclusive under a partial pressure of 10 kPa or less.
