A surfactant, a clay modified with a surfactant, the preparation processes described, and also the polymer nanocomposites produced from the modified clay. The surfactant of formula (I), characterized in that: R1: CnH2n+1 with n = 1-20; CnH2n-OH with n = 1-4; or CnH2n-SO3H with n = 1-4; R2: CnH2n+1 with n = 0-20; CnH2n-OH with n = 1-4; or CnH2n-SH with n = 1-4; R3: CnH2n+1 with n = 1-20; CnH2n-OH with n = 1-4; or CnH2n-SO3H with n = 1-4; R5: H, Cl, CH3, NO2, CN, SO3H, Br, NH2 or CO2H; R6: H, Cl, CH3, NO2, CN, SO3H, Br, NH2 or CO2H; R7: H, Cl, CH3, NO2, CN, SO3H, Br, NH2 or CO2H; R8: H, Cl, CH3, NO2, CN, SO3H, Br, NH2 or CO2H; and X-: Cl-, Br-, I-, CH3SO4-, C6H5SO3-, or CH3COC-.
