The shaft furnace for smelting scrap has a shaft (1) fed from above and a smelting zone (6) at the bottom. Burners (11) are distributed around the shaft wall (8) with a tap (3) at the base. The smelting zone expands upwards into the shaft section (5) containing the column of scrap, with an angled wall transit section (7) between the smelting zone and the burner at the scrap column shaft section. The angled wall has radial and axial adjustment. The burners are in sliding guides at the shaft wall.
