In a thermoelectric generator (30) a layer (48) of a phase change material is introduced between a pipe (32), which conducts off gases, and at least one thermoelectric module (40). This phase change material layer stores excess heat Q_E at excessively high off gas temperatures and thus protects the thermoelectric modules (40) and at the same time keeps the thermoelectric generator (30) at a constant temperature level, thus improving the efficiency thereof.
