Closed-loop electronic combustion control system for a diesel engine operating with premixed charge compression and equipped with an electronically controlled fuel injection system configured to accomplish a fuel injection sequence in a cylinder per engine cycle, wherein the fuel injection sequence comprises at least one pilot fuel injection and a successive main injection of fuel. The closed-loop electronic combustion control system comprises means for determining characteristic quantities of the combustion process, comprising a quantity indicative of the position of combustion in said engine cycle and a quantity indicative of combustion noise, and closed-loop means of fuel injection control configured to regulate the quantity of fuel injected during pilot fuel injection to control combustion noise and the position of the fuel injection sequence in the engine cycle to compensate for variations in the position of the combustion centroid in the engine cycle, (induced by regulation of the quantity of fuel injected during pilot injection or induced by any change in environmental or engine control conditions that alter the characteristics of the gas mixture taken in by the engine), and keep the position of the combustion centroid equal to a substantially constant value.
