This aim is achieved in that the beam property monitor (28; 28*) is arranged on the periphery of the beam perpendicular to the beam path (6) in such a manner that the beam properties are detected due to their direct interaction with particles of the beam in the halo region (36) and/or indirectly by electromagnetic interaction.
