A system and method for investigating the underwater topographic information of a water-body or water column that utilizes a plurality of autonomous surface vehicles ASVs (800) that implement a swarming search algorithm based on the biological behavior of the Drosophila (fruit fly) when in search for food or a mate and an algorithm based on the flight path of the Drosophila (fruit fly). The system of present invention comprises of a plurality of cylindrical shaped ASVs (800) that act swarming agents and are coordinated by a central base station (100) to search for a predefined target based on aforementioned algorithms.
