The present invention relates to a safety system and method for detecting the presence of a vehicle in a portion of a running track, in particular a railway track, as well as to a device for detection by means of RFID barrier to be used with or within such a safety system or method. The reader module selects and transmits a series of query data to the reference module thereof. The latter computes and returns a series of reply data in accordance with the received query data. A safety computer verifies that the reply data actually correspond to the query data and to the tag of the reference module. Good correlation, repeated over a large enough amount of data, guarantees that the likelihood of a catastrophic event is lower than a selected value. The reply data are computed, for example, by reading memory cells in the tag from a list of addresses transmitted by the reader.
