A method for real-time monitoring of usage of packet-based telecom services comprises:- communicating from a server (116) to a client (121, 122, 123) rate information;- local metering of usage of the packet-based telecom services in the client (121, 122, 123);- estimating in the client (121, 122, 123) usage costs based on the local metering and the rate information; and- displaying the usage costs (124, 125, 126) in the client (121, 122, 123);- sending from a server (116) to the client (121, 122, 123) asynchronous usage notifications (151) indicative for network-metered usage of the packet-based telecom services; and- adapting in the client (121, 122, 123) the usage costs (124, 125, 126) based on the asynchronous usage notifications (151).
