A method, a device and a system for estimating channels and inserting pilots in a multi-input multi-output (MIMO) system are disclosed in the invention. The method includes: determining whether the number of symbols in the MIMO area of a reception end is an integral multiple of four, and extracting pilot subcarriers from the symbol portion that is the integral multiple of four and the remaining symbol portion that is not the integral multiple of four respectively to perform channel estimation; correspondingly, determining at a transmission end whether the number of symbols in the MIMO area of the transmission end is an integral multiple of four, and inserting pilot subcarriers into the symbol portion that is the integral multiple of four and the remaining symbol portion that is not the integral multiple of four respectively. With the method in the invention, the insertion of pilot subcarriers can be flexibly implemented and channel estimation can be performed using the pilot subcarriers when any number of symbols are configured in a downlink MIMO system area, thus the restriction to channel estimation by symbol number is overcome, the flexibility of frame configuration in the downlink MIMO system is enhanced, and the utilization rate of subcarriers is improved.
