According to one embodiment, an ultrasonic detecting device includes a transmitter (50) arranged at a predetermined angle (θ) with respect to a conveying plane (P) on which a sheet (7) is conveyed, the transmitter (50) emitting ultrasonic waves towards the conveying plane (P); a receiver (60) provided with a plurality of channels (60a - 60h) detecting the ultrasonic waves, the receiver (60) detecting the ultrasonic waves incident on the channels; and a dividing member (70) to shield the receiver (60) from diffraction waves of the ultrasonic waves emitted from the transmitter (50), the diffraction waves being diffracted at an edge of the sheet (7) that delimits the sheet (7) in a direction perpendicular to a conveying direction of the sheet (7).
