A wireless communication system, method and base station for using a multi-user MIMO (MU-MIMO)-based blind interference alignment (BIA) scheme are described. In one embodiment, the wireless communication system comprises a plurality of terminals, wherein each terminal in the plurality has a single radio frequency (RF) chain that is operable in M antenna modes, where M is an integer, and further wherein each terminal shifts between the M antenna modes in a predetermined manner. The wireless communication system also includes one or more base stations to perform downlink transmissions to the plurality of terminals using a transmitter array of M transmit antennas and operable to communicate with one or more of the terminals using a multi-user MIMO (MU-MIMO)-based blind interference alignment (BIA) scheme that uses at least one code BIA code serving K terminals from the transmitter array over L(M+K-1) slots for some L0, wherein at least one of the one or more base stations transmits L symbols for user k, and where the L symbols for user k are transmitted over M distinct slots, within a set of L(M+D-1) consecutive slots, and where D is an integer less than K.
