The invention relates to a method for determining and selecting a criteria-evaluated mode of operation using Petri nets for orchestrating services in service-oriented industrial automation devices. The aim of the invention is to give the internal decision-making system of an automation device or another suitable computer system the ability to select a particular path in a process orchestrated by a Petri net (made of an orchestration of services), wherein various criteria are considered, such as energy-efficiency path, quality of the service, etc. A structural analysis is performed on a given Petri net orchestration, in order to obtain the transition invariants (T-invariants), which are the basis for the mode of operation. The modes of operation are then compared with decision criteria which subsequently produce the final decision weighting, in order to select a particular mode of operation to be performed by the device.
