The invention relates to a method of performing a laser based radar measurement. The method comprises the steps of illuminating a scene by transmitting a high power laser pulse generated by a laser device, and receiving a reflected high power laser pulse. The illuminating step is performed in dependence of an optical measurement executed for detecting the presence of any object within a predetermined range from the laser device.
