The method involves encapsulating a frame (44) i.e. Ethernetframe, in a packet of a level network layer of an open system interconnection (OSI) model compatible with a transit network. Each packet is transmitted (54) to a receiving network through the transit network, where each packet is a secured packet. A security encapsulation header (46) is generated, and an encapsulation packet comprising one of the header and the frame or a fragment of the frame is formed. Each secured packet is formed by applying cryptographic protection (48) to each encapsulation packet. An independent claim is also included for a device for transmitting data over a communication channel between a starting network and a receiving network through a transit network.
