PURPOSE: A method and apparatus for encoding a moving picture by adaptively applying the optimum estimation mode and a method and apparatus for decoding the moving picture are provided to encode and decode the moving picture by adaptively applying the optimum estimation mode according to each macro block of color elements of a current image.;CONSTITUTION: A moving picture decoding apparatus entropy-decodes an outputted bit stream(1501). The moving picture decoding apparatus converts the restored frequency element values from a frequency space to a color space(1503). If the restored information shows a residue conversion mode, the moving picture decoding apparatus generates first residues(1504,1505). If the restored information shows a single estimation mode, the moving picture decoding apparatus generates the estimation image(1506,1507).
