A multi-pass butt welded joint having excellent brittle crack propagation resistance comprising a multi-pass butt welded joint of steel plates characterized in that one or, separated from each other, more of either a weld layer and weld pass part with material characteristics differing from material characteristics of the surroundings and having a function of arresting propagation of a brittle crack are present between a front surface weld layer and a back surface weld layer.
