SELECTIVE HARQ COMBINING SCHEME FOR OFDM/OFDMA SYSTEMS

A method and apparatus for combining an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) / orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) hybrid automatic repeat at different stages of the receiver repeat request (HARQ) messages are presented. Type of HARQ combiner used for a particular channel may depend on a number of selection criteria, including the number of the HARQ buffer and the headroom of the bits needed for the modulation order, the combined signal for transmission. In some embodiments, combinations of different types of HARQ combiners may be designed by the receiver may be selected for each channel. Proper selection of the HARQ combining scheme may reduce the required HARQ buffer size may provide an increased combining gain when compared to conventional HARQ combining techniques. ;
