A method of operating a fuel cell system, the method comprising the steps of: (a) providing at least one fuel cell stack having a plurality of anode injectors in fluid communication with an anode inlet of the fuel cell stack and a control system in electrical communication with the fuel cell stack and the anode injectors; (b) determining whether an anode injector has failed in an open condition using the control system to monitor pressure at predetermined points in the fuel cell stack; and (c) enabling continued operation of the fuel cell stack if an anode injector has failed in an open state by using the control system to open a vent valve, characterized in that the vent valve is in fluid communication with an anode outlet through a conduit and the Anode outlet is exposed to a pressure of the cathode exhaust gas through the opened vent valve in order to lower the pressure in the fuel cell stack.
