The method involves calculating characteristic feature of fractal dimension of grey values of current image of forest or fractal dimension of cluster surface of binarized image of forest to determine smoke suspicion cluster in the current image. The surface midpoint of the cluster is determined and a contour is formed around the midpoint. The axis intercept of the fractal dimensions of grey values and cluster surface within the contour is evaluated and an alarm is triggered, if fractal dimensions and respective axis intercept lie within preset value. An independent claim is included for automatic forest fire detection device.
