Producing a thermoplastic chitosan derivative, comprises reacting chitosan with at least one organic carboxylic acid with at least two acidic functionalities, whose one functionality is derived from an acid anhydride and/or an acid halide. An independent claim is also included for the thermoplastic chitosan derivative produced by the above method.
