The system (10) has a switching unit (22) coupling a positive terminal (34) of an energy storage unit (32) to a battery (16) in one switching state and a negative terminal (36) of the energy storage unit with an electrical load (30) in another switching state. A control device (46) switches a switching unit between the two switching states. A reverse polarity protection device (33) is connected in series to the energy storage unit and formed to prevent current flow due to the battery attached with wrong polarity to the electrical system. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating an electric load in an electrical system of a motor car.
