The method involves detecting outer contour, structure and material defect locations of natural leather (10) by a camera (3). Contours (a, b) stored in a computer (6) are manually moved to a monitor (7) in two degrees of freedom and placed within the outer contour. The contours within the outer contour are projected on the leather by a projector (4) coupled with the computer and/or the monitor. The moving and positioning step and the projection step are repeated until nesting of the leather is completed, and the contours are cut from the leather using position data obtained in the monitor. An independent claim is also included for a system for nesting natural leather comprising a camera i.e. digital color camera.
