The system (1) has a starter lock (10) operated by a driver of a vehicle and switched by an ignition signal (11a). A bus system (12) is provided by an on-board network control device (13) of the vehicle for communication. Transmission of the ignition signal (11a) is limited from the starter lock to the on-board network control device. A hardware connection is limited between the starter lock and the on-board network control device on a hardware spacer (16), over which the ignition signal at the control device is conveyed. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating an ignition system.
