The element has a lower portion (7), a lateral portion (8) and an upper portion (9) for protecting a lower side (4), a front side (5) and a top side (6) of an edge (2) of a photovoltaic module (1), respectively. An integrated joint (10) arranges the upper portion at the lateral portion in a pivotably movable manner. The upper portion is pre-positioned in an open position, where the upper portion is further opened with respect to positioning of the upper portion parallel to the lower portion, where the element is flexibly designed. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating an upper portion of an edge protection element.
