The method involves coupling a signal beam (2) into a resonator (4), so that a measuring beam (7) is rotated in the resonator. A self-phase modulation of the measuring beam is executed in the resonator at a nonlinear optic element (8), where the self-phase modulation is proportional to power of the measuring beam in the optic element. A part of the measuring beam is decoupled as a detection beam (10) from the resonator. Phase displacement caused by the self-phase modulation is determined in relation to phase reference. The power is deflected from the determined phase displacement. An independent claim is also included for a device for measurement of power of a signal beam.
