The engine (1) has a rotatable cylinder drum (4) supported in a housing (2), and a piston (10) slidingly arranged in the cylinder drum. A sensor (14) determines rotation speed of the cylinder drum, and is arranged adjacent to a piston orbit during rotation of the cylinder drum for contactless direct detection of movement of the piston in a rotation direction of the cylinder drum. The sensor is arranged in an axial direction relative to axes of rotation (R1, R2) of the cylinder drum such that the sensor is always present directly adjacent to a portion of the piston.
