The method comprises joining two shaft parts to one another in an axial direction (22) of a hollow shaft (10) by friction welding, and forming a collar of the shaft from an externally placed material using a molding tool having a given geometry. A tensioning device is integrated to hold the shaft parts during friction welding. The molding tool comprises two oppositely arranged mold parts (36, 38), where the collar is formed between the mold parts. The mold parts are kept immobile during the formation of the collar and then moved relative to each other in the axial direction of shaft.
