The method involves detecting cavitations in a cavitation-endangered region of a hydraulic device by a sensor i.e. light sensitive sensor such as photodiode. The sensor is arranged downstream to the cavitation-endangered region and in proximity to an orifice having high flow rate of hydraulic fluid i.e. oil, and/or a location of cavitations such that illumination of the fluid falls on the sensor. The illumination of the fluid is detected by the sensor, where the illumination of the fluid indicates intense cavitations.
