Use of esterquats and/or amidoquats as additives in coolants for processing glass, silicon or carbides, is claimed. Independent claims are also included for: (1) a concentrate comprising at least one compound (I) or (II) or their mixtures, which is used as a coolant during the processing of glass, silicon or carbides; (2) a coolant comprising the above concentrate (0.005-less than 5 wt.%) in water, and further additives, where the sum of weights of all components is 100 wt.%; and (3) processing glass-, carbide-, or silicon surfaces, comprising using the above coolant.
