The method involves detecting the surroundings of the rail vehicle by a sensor, and creating a model of the environment of the rail vehicle. The position of the rail vehicle is determined based on a comparison of the newly acquired surrounding of the rail vehicle with the created model of the environment of the rail vehicle. An independent claim is also included for a system for determining the position of a rail vehicle.
