The method involves converting exhaust gas energy of an internal combustion engine (10) into driving power by low and high pressure turbines (13, 15). The turbines are supplied with exhaust gas in a rotational speed range of the engine, where the turbines are serially arranged in an exhaust gas stream. The engine is supplied with compressed fresh air from low and high pressure air compressors (14, 16) in another different rotational speed range of the engine. The compressors are arranged parallel to each other in a fresh air stream and driven by the respective turbines. An independent claim is also included for a turbocharging system comprising low and high pressure turbines.
