The method involves providing rail vehicle (3) with electric motors (1) for producing magnetic fields which drive wheels (4) of rail vehicle, and providing sensor device (5) comprising magnetic field direction detecting sensor (6). The direction of magnetic fields generated by electric motors is detected by magnetic field direction detecting sensor, after electric motors are switched ON. The rotation direction of running wheels is derived from the detected direction of magnetic fields.
