The system (1) has a coolant pump (5) operated by a cooling circuit (2) and passing through an engine block cooling jacket (3). Another cooling circuit (6) branched off from the former cooling circuit comprises a radiator (8) of an exhaust gas recirculation system, a heater (7) of a passenger compartment and another coolant pump (9). The radiator is arranged downstream the heater. A bypass pipe (17) branched off from the former cooling circuit is connected between the radiator and the heater, and leads into the latter cooling circuit.
