The method involves reducing divergence of a laser beam (70) in two directions simultaneously by two cylinder lenses (30, 40) that are arranged as a Galileo telescope and Keppler telescope. The laser beam is expanded in one of the directions such that the divergence in the direction corresponds to the divergence in the other direction. The laser beam is compressed in the latter direction by a pair of anamorphic prisms (10, 20) such that diameter of the laser beam in the latter direction corresponds to expand diameter of the laser beam in the former direction. An independent claim is also included for a beam shaping optic unit for a semiconductor laser.
