The internal combustion engine (11) has an exhaust gas sensor for detecting a concentration of a component of a gas, particularly a concentration of oxygen. The gas flows out from a combustion chamber (17) of the internal combustion engine. An adjusting unit is provided, which is driven by a control device (43) for controlling the internal combustion engine. The adjusting unit is assigned to an exhaust gas pipe (19) such that a reference gas is supplied in a calibration position of the adjusting unit of the exhaust gas sensor instead of the gases out flowing from the combustion chamber. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating an internal combustion engine.
