The appliance i.e. washing machine (1), has a rewritable memory device (7) i.e. electrically EPROM, for storing tariff data (9) of rates i.e. electricity rates. A communication interface is functionally coupled with the memory device to receive the tariff data. The communication interface consists of a man machine interface i.e. user interface (2), and a data interface (8) i.e. network interface. The user interface has a pixel-controllable display unit (5) e.g. LCD and segment display, for displaying the tariff data. A tariff-control element i.e. tariff button (4), operates the tariff data. The data interface is designed as a wired data interface Ethernet, and a wireless Bluetooth, wide area network and a mobile telephone. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a domestic appliance.
