The method involves controlling fuel pressure over a pressure regulating valve (7). Onboard network voltage is increased during full load condition of a combustion engine and depending on pressure in a common rail fuel injection system (10) such that the fuel pressure over the valve is increased. Reduction of the network voltage is controlled when the pressure in the injection system lies above a preset threshold value. A reference value of the pressure in the injection system is computed according to charging state of a battery and/or the network voltage. An independent claim is also included for a pressure regulating valve formed as a part of a common rail fuel injection system in a motor car.
