The method involves connecting electrodes (128, 134, 142) of cells (124, 140) of a sensor element i.e. wide band lambda sensor, of a sensor device (110) by a solid electrolyte. Gas is passed from a gas measuring chamber (112) to one of the electrodes over a diffusion barrier (138). Components of the gas pumped from one of the electrodes by one of the cells are returned to the respective electrode over the diffusion barrier, and two pumping currents are measured by the cells, respectively. Properties of the diffusion barrier are judged based on the pumping currents. An independent claim is also included for a sensor device comprising a sensor element.
