The device comprises a pressure vessel (1), in which a metal salt as the storage substance is included for ammonia, and heating elements (13) for heating the metal salt, where the heating elements are tubular heating coils. The heating element is electrically heated and/or heated by flowing through a heat transfer medium. The tubular heating coil is a double heating coil so that an inner tubular heating coil is enclosed by an outer tubular heating coil. The heating coils separated in the heating output are controllable. Apertures are formed in the heating element. The device comprises a pressure vessel (1), in which a metal salt as the storage substance is included for ammonia, and heating elements (13) for heating the metal salt, where the heating elements are tubular heating coils. The heating element is electrically heated and/or heated by flowing through a heat transfer medium. The tubular heating coil is a double heating coil so that an inner tubular heating coil is enclosed by an outer tubular heating coil. The heating coils separated in the heating output are controllable. Apertures are formed in the heating element, through which the ammonia is removed from the vessel and closed with a filter to retain impurities. The heating element is made of a stainless steel of St 1.4404 type. The metal salt is a halide of an alkaline earth metal.
