The cylinder has a piston rod comprising a piston in a cylinder housing, and a displacement measuring system comprising a sensor system for determining an absolute position of the piston rod relative to a reference point. The sensor system is a laser range finder. The displacement measuring system comprises an incremental displacement sensor as another sensor system, where output signals of the sensor systems are merged together in an electronic unit. The latter sensor system comprises an optical mouse and a micromechanical acceleration sensor.
