The compressor (1) has an electrically or pneumatically switchable valve (6) i.e. pressure relief valve, connected with a return line (5) and arranged in a compressor housing. A pressure outlet (3) is connected with a suction portion (2) and/or a combustion chamber (13). The return line is opened in a position of the valve and closed in another position of the valve while reaching predetermined opening pressure of the valve, where opening pressure of the valve is larger than closing pressure of the valve. A non-return valve (8) is arranged in the suction portion. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a compressor.
