The method involves setting electric voltage on a fuel injection element i.e. piezo injector. Partial oscillation of a characterizing signal of the fuel injection element is detected. The detected signal is assigned to the position of the fuel injection element. The voltage and/or a time course of the voltage of the fuel injection element are detected as the signal characterizing the oscillation. The fuel injection element is checked in homogeneous operation and/or in coasting of an internal combustion engine e.g. diesel engine.
