The apparatus (10) has a sensor (14) for three-dimensional (3D) measurement of a workpiece (12) arranged relative to a sensor head (16). A 3D non-contact position sensing unit (22) detects a position of the sensor head arranged with a marker (24) i.e. optical transmitter or receiver, relative to a reference object (26). The sensor head and the reference object comprise coupling units respectively for uniquely and mechanically coupling the sensor head with the reference object. An independent claim is also included for a method for calibrating a 3D contactless position detection device.
