The inclination of surface of liquid or granular material is determined by measuring the distance of three or more points of a detection device (1) to the surface of the liquid or the granular material (20) in the container (30) by using three or more points emitted acoustic or optical measuring signals (11-13) transmitted to liquid or granular material. The measuring signals have solid angle span, and the radar beams are used as measuring signals. The angle of 45-120[deg] is formed between the measuring signals. An independent claim is included for detection device for determining inclination of surface of liquid or granular material relative to container.
