Determining starting position for an electrochemical machining, between an electrode (3) and a workpiece (2), comprises carrying out relative movement between the electrode and the workpiece, until a predetermined electrical value, preferably an electric resistance value and/or a value for electric current, is reached, which is used as a measure for the distance between the electrode and the workpiece, and for determining the starting position. A voltage is applied between the electrode and the workpiece. The method is carried out contactless. Determining starting position for an electrochemical machining, between an electrode (3) and a workpiece (2), comprises carrying out relative movement between the electrode and the workpiece, until a predetermined electrical value, preferably an electric resistance value and/or a value for electric current, is reached, which is used as a measure for the distance between the electrode and the workpiece, and for determining the starting position. A voltage is applied between the electrode and the workpiece. The workpiece and the electrode are surrounded by an electrolyte solution (4). The method is carried out contactless. The relative movement between the electrode and the workpiece is carried out in three-dimensional direction. An independent claim is also included for a device (1) for determining the starting position for the electrochemical machining of the workpiece, between the electrode and the workpiece, comprising a workpiece holder for holding the workpiece, which exhibits a pilot hole (5), an electrode, an electrolyte solution, in which the workpiece and the electrode are arranged, a displacement device for relative movement between the workpiece and the electrode, an electrical measuring device, which determines the electrical quantity, preferably the electrical resistance and/or the current, between the workpiece and the electrode, and a control unit, which is connected with the displacement device and the electrical measuring device, and is designed for controlling the displacement device such that a relative positioning is carried out between the workpiece and the electrode based on the determined values of the electrical measuring device, where the values occur in at least three directions, preferably three directions that are respectively perpendicular to each other.
