The device (2) has a circuit input (4) provided with input terminals (L, N), and an electrical intermediate circuit (6) for providing intermediate circuit voltage (UZ) for an electrical load (3) i.e. electric drive motor. Switching current limiters (5) for limiting a current value of electrical switching current (I) are provided between the input and the intermediate circuit. A control circuit (17) enables switching of an electrical switch (11) between open and bypass positions. The control circuit measures electrical alternating voltage (UA) at tap nodes (16) coupled with the limiters. The switching current limiters are designed as ohmic resistors. The switch is designed as a relay. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating an electrical load.
