The unit (1) has a transparent, touch-sensitive input field (2) overlaying a display (4) i.e. LCD. A lighting unit (3) is provided for lighting of the display and the input field. A monitoring and control device (8) monitors operability of the lighting unit. The monitoring and control device prevents an operation of the operation unit by the input field when the operability of the lighting unit is affected. The lighting unit comprises lights (3a, 3a') in the form of LEDs and gas discharge lamps. The lighting unit has a ballast (3') attached to the lights. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a device for performing safety-relevant action, comprising an operation unit and a positioning unit (2) a method for performing safety-relevant action by a device.
