The method involves illuminating a point of the fiber network with polarized light (12) from a direction that is more than 15 degree, particularly 10 degree and not more than 5 degree from the normal line. The ellipsometric parameter of the directly reflected light (18) on the optical components (20,22) is determined. The gradient of the ellipsometric parameter is compared with a reference value. An independent claim is also included for a device for analyzing a fiber network.
